Volunteer Stories
Shmulik Malel
Ten years ago my father died of cancer.
I felt what it's like to be a family member of a patient - the helplessness and the feeling that it is impossible to help in such difficult moments, while at the same time dealing with the changing situation at home.
I wanted to help them, the patient’s family members, to be there for them, because I was there too. I know what they are going through.
As part of my practice as a therapist, I applied to Mandalat Halev and asked to treat only family members. I was told at the time that they still do not treat family members, but only the patients themselves.
I moved on with my life, and then a cancer patient came to me for treatment. I took care of him and gave him everything I could, helped him, and we forged a strong bond until he passed away. I felt that his treatment was the the resolution that I didn’t have with my father. As a result, I opened up and was ready to treat both those dealing with cancer and their families. I returned to Mandalat Halev and offered myself as a volunteer and was received with open arms and an open heart.
At the beginning of my journey as a therapist I had a dream to take care of people who really need it and financially don’t have the means to. I thought to myself that one day, when I will be financially settled, I will set up a large voluntary care center for people, where I can offer them what they need and improve their quality of life.
Mandalat Halev made this dream come true for me! They have helped me to take care of people who really need it. For me this is a life mission!
The one who gives earns a lot, no less than the one who receives. Giving is immensely satisfying. The knowledge that I manage to help people - physically, mentally, emotionally, and change their world, bring them hope, a smile - is the most amazing thing you can do. I won.
My message is that we don't have to wait to have money, to have time, for volunteering to fit into our lives. You just have to do it. It doesn't detract from our life, on the contrary - it gives us more, it opens up many things in life, we meet more people, learn more, meet volunteers and contestants, it's a whole world.
Today I dedicate about 20-25 hours a month to treating contestants and family members and I am satisfied and enjoying every moment and every smile I get back.
Thank you to Mandalat Halev for making my dream come true and allowing me to give, and thank you to all the patients who put their trust in me and come for treatment. This is a great privilege.

One Friday afternoon I was sitting with a coffee and the local newspaper when I came across a small article about an association called 'Mandalat Halev', which supports cancer patients and their families.
I really connected with what was said there. I don't know how to explain exactly what I felt, but something strong inside me said that this is the next thing I should do, that this is an important and essential activity that touches the lives of all of us.
I realized that in order to join the community I had to become a therapist, which was far from me at that time - I was then (six years ago) an experienced lawyer living a good life, very far from the therapeutic world.
I found myself looking for a direction for my studies, which would be meaningful for me and for those I come in contact with. All because it was so clear to me that I had to volunteer at Mandalat Halev. After a few months, I signed up for the Satya method trainer program. Training in the Satya method is a way to get to know ourselves in new ways and with compassion, to examine the things that are really important to us and the gaps that are important for us to reduce in our lives, especially at significant points in time where the realization comes that "there is no other time". Our life is here and now.
When I finished the course of study and the internship, I immediately turned to Mandalat Halev. I showed up and said I wanted to volunteer!
About a year and a half after I started volunteering at Mandela, my father got cancer. The volunteering at Mandela, and the training we went through, allowed me to be with him and take advantage of every moment, while also being able to support him and know how to help him, to not panic, to love and say goodbye with love.
Our time is limited, we move forward in our lives and don't always realize that we have an important and meaningful choice on how to live our lives and how to be with the most significant people in our lives. I get to train people, allow them to see their choices while also giving them "breathing space", even in the most difficult and complex moments in their lives . This connects them to what is really important to them. And this is my mission.
I have volunteers at Mandalat Halev for years now. I completely left my practice as a lawyer and have continued to deepen and expand my clinic. Today I treat kids, adults, and couples using the Satya method. It opens my heart to be with inspiring people like the Mandalat Halev community. They are a constant reminder that we are not alone, but part of a caring, generous, and supportive community.
